Are people higher up in an organisation less ethical?

Are people higher up in an organisation less ethical? Here’s a question that impacts the standards that we expect from our leaders within companies. Does receiving more money (from, for example, a promotion) paradoxically lead us to behave less ethically and more selfishly?

This study conducted by psychologists at the University of California in Berkeley suggests that may well be the case. In a number of experiments, those higher up the social strata cheated, cut corners and lied more than those lower down the wealth pile. The experiments included everything from driving habits and behaviour at work – two areas that foreigners often have a great deal of frustration with in South-East Asia!

As the ancient saying goes, it may after all be true that ‘wealth oft begets an ape!’

What this means for companies in Asia

We are clearly not suggesting that the results of the experiments, conducted in America, automatically apply to individuals in Asia.

However the casual observer can see the impact materialism is having on these societies, and specifically the changes in behaviours of the people in them.

And as the corporate environment becomes ever more competitive, the pressure on employees and managers to ‘cut corners’ or worse is becoming greater.

Which is why companies need to help those employees as they progress up the corporate ladder – and another reason why training in the region is an essential component of every company’s activities (as we saw here).

One way companies can do that is to create a clear, effective leadership transitioning programme as their employees rise up the organisation, fostering a resilient culture of ethical behaviour.

We can think of no better way to do so than by using the world’s #1 leadership development programme (offered exclusively by Talent Technologies in Thailand), details of which can be found here.

In the meantime we’d love to hear your views on this topic – so please feel free to add your comments below!
