The Five Factors of Emotional Intelligence

Emotional Intelligence is a highly valuable and greatly underrated skill that is essential for achieving results at work, as we have already seen here. But what are the factors of Emotional Intelligence and how do we apply them?

There are a number of different models of Emotional Intelligence. We don’t want to labour the differences in this post as many are quite nuanced. Instead we want to focus on the five key factors embraced by the model we use – and assess – in our Emotional Intelligence training programme.

The model is devised by respected  psychologists from Multi-Health Systems and the technical report into the validity of the assessment (for those interested) can be downloaded here.

How to use the model

The model has two predominant colours, as you can see – green and mauve.

The green area represents the passive aspects of Emotional Intelligence – namely how we perceive the outside world (top), and how to manage our emotions effectively to maintain balance as the world impacts us (below).

An example of managing emotions is contained in our post on the 4 Practices of Emotional Control.

The mauve area represents the active aspects of Emotional Intelligence. It’s here where we engage the world.

Emotional Intelligence skills in this domain include:

· Decisionmaking – how to overcome the urges and biases that can hamper us from making sound decisions, or not making decisions at all

· Achieving – how to motivate ourselves in order to achieve the goals we have set ourselves, or the tasks we want to accomplish (see also our Head, Heart, Hand model here)

· Influencing – how to engage, mobilise and inspire others to work towards a common action or goal.

Becoming a better leader with Emotional Intelligence

As the research above has shown, having good Emotional Intelligence helps us become a better leader, too. The EI model above is included in the Talent Technologies leadership development model here. And the results filter down to a company’s bottom line.
