HR – stop doing this…

We recently posted an article on The Matrix and how the movie linked to deeper themes of strategic thinking.

And for those of you in HR and management, we highly recommend watching the movie for its increasingly relevant metaphors in business today.

One of those themes is that of competencies, and how competencies are negatively impacting business and, worse, individuals as a whole.

HR – stop doing this…

You see, when HR pushes competencies and its various other artificial constructs, what it really is doing is little different than…


…and instead, do this

Instead of fighting nature, HR professionals can choose to work with nature.

We have seen previously how competencies are artificial and even harmful, and a thinly-veiled attempt to create the ‘well-rounded individual’ that Peter Drucker said simply didn’t exist. Instead, as he counselled in The Effective Executive, every human naturally has peaks and valleys – abilities and disabilities.

As professionals, we can discover our peaks and valleys at work through identifying our unique talents.

Put simply, we all have differences that engage us to our work in different ways, and we only grow by honouring, not minimising, these differences.

So HR – if you want to be more Neo and less Mr Smith – think First Who, then What, instead of First What, then Who…
