Presenting in Thai? Use these techniques…
If you are about to present in Thai, and would like some tips to give your presentation punch, this recent post on BBC is worth a read.
The article shares the presentation secrets John F Kennedy used to such great effect throughout his political career.
Even though JFK was presenting in English, the techniques can be used if you are presenting in Thai or any other language for that matter.
Let’s run through the key learnings which also feature in our Presentation Talent! programme:
#1 Use the ‘Power of Three’
The human brain remembers information better in ‘threes’ than any other number. In a previous post we discussed how Steve jobs uses this technique in his presentations, while this article shows how you can use The Power of Three in your slides.
Example from JFK: ‘Where the strong are just (i), and the weak secure (ii), and the peace preserved (iii).’
#2 Use imagery
The Thai language is one naturally full of imagery (as English is). We always encourage participants presenting in Thai to make full use of this imagery!
Imagery is natural and makes your presentations more memorable, since images stick.
Example from JFK: ‘The torch has been passed to a new generation of Americans.’
#3 Use drama
There are many dramatic devices we can use in our presentations.
One of JFK’s favourite devices was the dramatic contrast.
When presenting, the dramatic contrast enables you to create two extremes, thus channelling your audience either to the middle of the two extremes, or to the ‘right’ choice instead of the ‘wrong’ choice.
The dramatic contrast gives your audience the power of choice. The key is to make that choice as obvious to see and simple for your audience to make as possible.
Here’s how JFK did it in his presentations and speeches:
‘We choose these goals not because they are easy, but because they are hard.’
‘Let us never negotiate out of fear. But let us never fear to negotiate.’
