1. Become synonymous with your employer. This means living and (if leading) shaping the core values of the company you work for. You need to BE THE BRAND. And from there build a cult-like culture, which is a key ingredient to success, as we discovered in a previous post here.

2. Play to the strengths of your own character. For SAF (Sir Alex Ferguson), this means staying true to his temperament, and using it to develop his team. Examples – his well-known ‘hairdryer treatment’, ‘mind games’ and readiness to take on any of his players who do not give their best effort. Which brings us to…

3. ‘Effort’ is a talent too. Those of you following this blog will know the pains we go to to define ‘talent’. For SAF, who grew up in the docks in Govan, effort is a talent too. Interesting.

4. ‘Control, managing change, and observation.’ These are the three main leadership qualities identified by SAF. The key to control is information – so SAF finds everything out about his players. He taps into multiple information channels, a feat that ex-Prime Minister Tony Blair found impressive.

5. Combat complacency. To combat complacency, Sir Alex is never satisfied. ‘Never be satisfied’ is a mantra that has undoubtedly helped him propel Manchester United to unparallelled success.
