what makes great talentTo many, what makes great talent is a mystery. We may have some sense of what ‘talent’ is. But when pushed, we find it really difficult to put ‘talent’ into words. So we thought it is time to set the record straight – again!

What doesn’t make great talent

The most common mistakes people make with regard to talent is that great performance (especially at work) is ‘great talent’. And then the recruiters will tell you that ‘the best predictor for future performance is past success.’ Nothing could be further from the truth. Performance is simply performance and can change, but talent doesn’t change (as we have seen here).

Another mistake people make is that they believe they ‘know’ talent. Maybe in a very vague and incommunicable sense. But for companies that want to hire great talent, that isn’t good enough. If you are a manager then you need to know the exact terms for talent. You can find the list here.

What makes great talent

Everyone has talent – there is no mystique about this. Your ‘talents’ are simply the synaptic connections in your brain – and specifically, what they connect up to. These are the ‘information superhighways’ that are formed by the age of 16 and don’t change thereafter – so for great performance it is essential to understand these connections and what they mean for your abilities. We explain the difference this makes to each individual here. And you can find out your talents using our assessment here.

Using the Highlands Ability Battery, it’s possible not only to identify your talents but then to cluster these in order to identify a person’s strengths and for there discover the ‘strongest role’ for that person.

As Rasmus Ankersen clarified in the video above, it’s this that is the best predictor of great performance.
