The 4 Sources of Emotional Resilience

One of the key factors of Emotional Intelligence, as we have seen here previously, is Achievement. And before Achievement comes Managing Emotions.

But what do you do when you have used techniques to manage your emotions but they have lost their efficacy? Or when you are not just burnt out but also burnt up? Given the chronic stress many of us face at work, this syndrome is becoming increasingly prevalent. And this is why a key component of Achievement lies in self-renewal.

The 4 Sources of Emotional Resilience

Dr Richard Boyatzis, who has led and participated numerous neuroscientific studies into Emotional Intelligence, identifies 4 sources of Emotional Resilience that activate what he calls the parasympathetic nervous system and in turn kick-starts the self-renewal process.

4 Sources of Emotional Resilience

1. Mindfulness

Boyatzis includes in this self-renewal practice…

· Exercise (within limits). Over-exercise can act as a stressor.

· Prayer. Importantly, prayer to a non-vengeful, loving God. Prayer allows for a natural ‘pause’ and for centering oneself.

· Meditation. Meditating three times a week can help the renewal process.

Note that rest, by itself, does not promote renewal (according to the research from the FMRI studies).

2. Playfulness

Playfulness stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) and the self-renewal process. Playfulness includes laughter. Many online games don’t promote emotional resilience and self-renewal because they often do not include or provoke laughter.

3. Hope

Hope activates the PNS and is a process as we have already seen here. Future orientation is a key factor of inspiration.

4. Compassion

Helping others, feeling for others, not only loved ones but also volunteering and also pets also activates the PNS and boosts self-renewal and emotional resilience.
